How AI upscaling works

Standard resizing blurs edges because it guesses missing pixels by averaging neighbours. Real-ESRGAN uses a deep neural network trained on millions of image pairs to intelligently reconstruct detail — sharpening edges, recovering texture, and removing compression artefacts at the same time.

2× vs 4×

2× is faster and works well for most use cases — printing, presentation slides, social media. 4× produces dramatically larger output (16× the original pixel count) and is best for small thumbnails or low-resolution scans that need significant enlargement.

Best results

Works best on photos and illustrations under 1500 × 1500 px. For very large source images, resize down first using the Image Resizer, then upscale — you'll get better quality and faster processing. Highly compressed JPEGs benefit the most from upscaling since the model also reduces artefacts.

How is AI upscaling different from regular resizing?
Regular resizing (bicubic, bilinear) blurs edges because it just interpolates existing pixels. AI upscaling (Real-ESRGAN) uses a neural network trained on millions of images to predict and add realistic detail, producing sharper, cleaner results.
What scale factors are available?
2x doubles the width and height (4x the total pixels). 4x quadruples both dimensions (16x the total pixels). For most use cases 2x is faster and sufficient.
How long does upscaling take?
The AI model (~5 MB) downloads once and is cached. Processing time depends on image size and your device — a 500×500 image takes roughly 5–15 seconds. Very large images (above 1500px) may take longer; consider resizing first.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The entire AI model runs locally inside your browser using TensorFlow.js. Your image never leaves your device.
